Here we have one of the new Z68 type motherboards for Intel Sandybridge from ASRock, these new boards claim to allow use of the in-built graphics capability of the Intel chip and also the overclock-ability of the P67 boards.

Currently retailing for approximately £155 it is not a cheap board but it has plenty of new features to tempt!

Will it live up to expectations and perform as well as our current favourite the P67 platform? – Are the extra features of any use when it comes to gaming?

Let’s get a rundown of the specs and onto the reviews to find out:

Reviewers thoughts

Greg awards Silver - Click for full review So it seems the new Z68 Boards do indeed allow one to use the integrated graphics capability of the Sandybridge chips and also allow the same level of overclocking that was previously available with the P boards. That makes it the obvious new choice over the H and P boards; but not really a worth while upgrade for anyone with an existing P board.

The board performed well in tests and was only let down by the inferior on-board sound which suffered from terrible interference. It’s a shame as I have a spare SSD and would have liked to have upgraded to this board to make use of the Smart Response caching.

Greg awards Silver - Click for full review Overall I’m very impressed with the ASRock Z68 Extreme4 motherboard, it’s well made, it’s good value for money (especially if you fancy some of those other features! (see Overview/Greg’s Review)) and it performed well.

Apart from the overclocking issues this is definitely a great board and I would happily swap out my existing board for the ASRock Z68 Extreme4, maybe I might just do that…

Greg awards Silver - Click for full review Overall I’m very impressed with the overclocking on the ASRock Z68 Extreme4 motherboard which seemed to be simple with the overclock profiles provided (just right for me), it looks good and seems to be well made, and packs some interesting features, if you are running a multi-use, non-dedicated gaming rig.

The performance was a little disappointing at the 4.4Ghz that I was running my Gigabyte board at, and I’m still a little intrigued why these score should have come out, however it’s interesting (and encouraging) that the only scores increase at 4.4Ghz was in the benchmark that actually runs “real game code”.

Final Verdict

The ASRock board has proven very popular amongst the pcGameware team, with 2 silvers and a bronze award. Greg was most impressed with the board as a whole and loved all of the extra features on offer. James was particularly impressed with the quality and stability of the board (as he has had issues with the Asus board in his rig). Terry got some awesome overclocking results but seemed to encounter some strange benchmark scores that he could not explain…

Overall a great board and one we would recommend, it’s got a lot of features, it overclocks well and is stable, what more could we really want?
